Woman, 82, injured after handbag is stolen in street

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was robbed on a busy road.

The 82-year-old victim and another elderly woman were at the junction of Derwent Street and Norton Road, in Norton, walking in the direction of Victoria Avenue, at around 7.30pm on Sunday when the incident took place.

A man riding a bicycle grabbed the woman’s handbag, dragging her to the floor and leaving her with minor leg injuries.

The suspect made off on the bike with the bag, which contained £55 in cash, a mobile phone and purse.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his 20s, over 6ft tall with a fair complexion and short, fair hair.

He was wearing a dark hooded top.

Officers believe that there may be a number of people who witnessed the incident who have not yet come forward, including two teenage girls who were believed to have been at a nearby bus stop at the time of the incident.
