FIREFIGHTERS were called to the rescue after a woman fell 20ft down the cliffs at Blackhall Colliery.

Officers from Peterlee Fire Station received a call at 3pm today after the woman slipped 20ft down an embankment.

She had been walking alone when she fell and was unable to get back up to the top of the beach banks on her own.

Firefighters strapped the woman to a board before hoisting her to safety.

Officers say the ambulance service couldn’t give them an estimated arrival time, so she was airlifted by the RAF helicopter to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with suspected hip injuries.
