Woolies reunion

FORMER workers from a much-loved store which was forced to close its doors after the struggling business collapsed are being invited to a reunion.

Anyone who worked at Woolworths, either when it was more recently in Hartlepool's Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, or the town's Lynn Street, from 1968 up to 1995 are urged to go along to the get-together.

Former Woolies worker June Cormack, who was employed at the store from 1973-1983, is organising the event.

The 55-year-old, from the Park Road area of town, said she would love to hear from any of her former colleagues but she was particularly having trouble getting in touch with Marion Appleby, Cath Scott and Margaret Minton, who all worked at both the Lynn Street and shopping centre stores.

June worked as a delicatessen supervisor at Woolies, before leaving to work as a shop assistant for Mary Lambert's bakers and has been there ever since.

She said she would also like to hear from former manager John Davey.

June said: "There are still quite a few women who worked in the Lynn Street Woolies around and it would be lovely to hear from them, as well as anyone else from Woolies up until 1995.

"I know Irene Codd, from the Fens, worked at Lynn Street years back and she is still around."

June said it had been a shock to hear that the popular store had to close along with 805 other UK branches after the company had achieved 99 years in business.

"We were really sorry to hear about it closing," she said.

"We had some lovely times and lovely memories. They were happy times. Everybody got on well, and everybody there knew everybody.

"The Christmas do's in the Windsor restaurant were the best.

"Everybody went. It's so sad. It was a thriving business when we were there. There was a delicatessen, a butcher's, a cake stand, greengrocer's, a clothes department, a paint department, there was everything."

June added: "If we could get in touch with our old manager John Davey, it would be lovely."

The reunion will take place at the Douglas Hotel on the Grange Road/Murray Street junction in Hartlepool on Wednesday, April 1 from 7pm.

There will be a 6 charge to cover buffet costs and anyone wanting more information can contact June on (01429) 298456.
