POST Office workers in Hartlepool look set to take part in a national strike on the same day that Royal Mail staff walk out.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) announced the industrial action at the Post Office’s 372 Crown offices on Monday, November 4.

The post office in Hartlepool’s Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is a Crown office and the union’s regional secretary said he expected unanimous support of the strike action by its members.

It is in response to a pay freeze, plans to close or franchise 75 offices and cut up to 1,500 jobs.

Paul Clays, regional secretary of the CWU in the North-East, said: “Negotiations have broken down and we are trying to stop the Royal Mail and Post Office from taking away terms and conditions and putting in new ones which are detrimental to people that work in the Post Office.

“I think it will be supported 100 per cent.”

The same day Royal Mail workers walk out over the Government’s controversial privatisation of the company.

A Post Office spokesman said: “The union are calling for an above inflation pay agreement when last year our overall performance was a loss of £116m.

“We must reverse this loss of public money.”
