GREENER travel will be on the agenda for council staff who would normally use their own car for work purposes.
Durham County Council, one of the region’s largest employers, will take delivery of a new zero-emissions Nissan Leaf electric car next Monday.
The vehicle will be available for use as a pool car by staff who need to travel as part of their job, helping to reduce the council’s carbon footprint.
Coun Neil Foster, the council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “The Nissan Leaf car will be an essential part of the council’s efforts to reduce its impact on the environment and encourage sustainable travel.
“The fact that the car uses low-carbon technology, in which the North-East is a recognised leader, and produces zero exhaust emissions can only have a positive impact on the air quality in our city and town centres.”
