Youngsters build grand designs in Hartlepool Carnival sandcastle competition

Youngsters showed their creative flair by building all kinds of imaginative sandcastles for Hartlepool Carnival.

Children big and small grabbed their buckets and spades and made a beeline for the Fish Sands on the Headland where the popular contest was held.

It was just one of a host of free community events put on by volunteers from the Hartlepool Carnival committee this week.

Among the clever designs were Durham Cathedral, a volcano, pyramid and detailed scene of the Headland.

The tough task of judging fell to lifeguards from Hartlepool RNLI.

A carnival spokesman said: “The competition went well and the kids really enjoyed it.

“The standard of entries this year was very good and afterwards the children queued up for their free drinks and crisps which we provided.”

The event, sponsored by Headland Post Office, awarded cash prizes of £15 for first, £10 for second and £3 for third to the winners.

It was open to youngsters aged between four and eight with another category for older children between nine and 13.

The Carnival Prince and Princess Competition takes place on Thursday at the Victoria Arms on Northgate at 1pm.

It is open to children aged between 11 and 16 and is free to enter with the winner receiving £30, runner-up getting £20 and third place £10.

Numerous Headland pubs are organising their own events throughout the week.
