A lasting testament

IT was with great sadness I heard about the passing of Bob Barnfather.

Bob was a true champion for the citizens of Hartlepool and a great friend of Belle Vue Community, Sports & Youth Centre.

Bob became involved with the centre in the early 1980s.

This was when the social club members decided that there was a great need for a youth club for the children of the town, but especially of the Belle Vue area.

The club members organised the residents and local community and a major fundraising project was started.

Bob, who was Hartlepool borough councillor for the Belle Vue area, which was then in the Stranton ward, came on board and devoted an immense amount of time and effort to helping to get the centre built.

Bob involved the Community Programme and along with other benefactors the centre became more than just a dream and the centre was built.

The centre was opened in July 1985 and Bob became chairman until his illness meant he had to retire.

The centre was still close to Bob’s heart and he was proud as punch when Tony Blair, Prime Minister, opened the new extension in February 2003.

Bob will be remembered by us all from the Belle Vue Centre.

The centre, along with many other projects such as the restoration of HMS Warrior, will remain a lasting testament to Bob’s efforts and dedication.

God bless, Bob.

Bob Farrow,
