What a superb night it turned out to be for UKIP in the local election results.
An analysis of UKIP’s performance shows that we are the de facto opposition to Labour in Hartlepool.
I must begin by thanking the 6,857 electors who voted UKIP and supported our 11 candidates.
Of course, the real icing on the cake was seeing three victories on the night, which increases our Hartlepool Borough Council presence to five in the council chamber.
On behalf of your three new UKIP councillors, I extend our warmest thanks, with the promise that you now have a guarantee of real opposition to Labour and the Tories.
Added to the three victories, our eight other candidates delivered us seven very credible second places, and one third in Seaton.
UKIP’s performance is worth a degree of statistical analysis.
We averaged 36.3% across the 11 wards, compared with Labour’s 35.4%.
Overall we tallied 6,857 votes (35.9% of the total vote of 19,081), almost on par with Labour’s 6,923 (36.2%).
