LETTER: HMS Hood article brought back sad memories

HMS Hood, which was sunk by the German warship the Bismarck in 1941.
HMS Hood, which was sunk by the German warship the Bismarck in 1941.

I AM 81 years old and upon reading the Hartlepool Mail I noticed an article asking about information regarding HMS Hood.

My sister was engaged to a Samuel (Sammy) Johnson who was a sailor on HMS Hood.

Sammy actually lost his life on the Hood. We lived in West View then and I have such vivid memories of him coming to our house and cuddling me.

I was only five then and he used to make such a fuss over me. My sister, who now lives in Australia, was also called up for appropriate war work.

Your article on HMS Hood brought back all these wonderful but very sad memories.

Sammy came from the Headland and I hope this letter makes it to the Mail as his family might read it and someone may have a photograph.

Mrs Jean Kinnersley,

Chandlers Close,

Hartlepool.
