Letter of the week: Hartlepool Borough Council's £90,000 bins are a wasted opportunity

On August 17 I got a letter from Thirteen group confirming that Hartlepool Borough Council had reviewed the Homecall service and would no longer be subsiding it.

This means a lot of elderly, disabled and vulnerable people will have to pay £4.79 a week if they want to keep their pendant alarms.

It doesn’t sound much, but it is a lot if you are on a low income.

I then saw that our Labour-led council is very proud to have bought 15 hi-tech waste bins at a cost of £90,000 (Mail, August 17).

Enough to fund the Homecall service for quite a long time, I should imagine.
