Letter of the week: Pleasure to see Horden hero play football

The late Stan Anderson steps out for Sunderland.
The late Stan Anderson steps out for Sunderland.

Sad to here about death of former Sunderland, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough captain Stan Anderson.

Stan, from Horden, was very good footballer and shone in many aspects of the game.
Anderson – Daniel – Aitken and Anderson – Hurley – McNab were the half back lines I associate him with.

Inch perfect passes even on heavy pitches when mud stuck to the ball.

Sunderland 2 Arsenal 1 when Stan scored both goals during a memorable cup tie.

I was surprised he was sold to Newcastle.

It was a pleasure to see him play.

Derek Sherriff,

Sunderland.
