I WOULD like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to the 9,931 electors who cast their votes for Ukip candidates in the recent Hartlepool Borough Council elections.
We contested 10 out of the 11 wards and achieved a very credible 27.4 per cent of the vote in those 10 wards.
To achieve 10 very good, and in some cases, tantalisingly close, second places indicated the strength of our campaign.
For example, in Seaton ward, Phil Fenn came within 18 votes of taking the seat.
He got 23.6 per cent, which Paul Thompson (Independent) won with 24 per cent.
I would also like to thank Ukip voters for giving Iain Wright the fright of his life in the parliamentary election.
Phillip Broughton’s vote of 11,052 (28 per cent), putting him a very close runner-up, was very much in line with our very encouraging national result where we amassed almost four million votes.
I think I can safely say that Ukip has well and truly established itself as a real opposition to Labour, not only in Hartlepool but across the North-East.
Once again, thank you to all who supported Ukip in Hartlepool.
