I was Labour’s European candidate for Cleveland and Yorkshire North in 1984.
Stephen Lewis offered to help our campaign.
It was decided to deploy him to Hartlepool.
He toured the town, dressed in a bus inspector’s uniform, haranguing the residents from an open-topped double decker.
Whenever he saw a dog, he shouted: “What’s life like under the Tories? Ruff! Ruff!”
It was the high spot of the entire campaign.
