On the way to work in mill

editorial image

It was the early morning custom, before going to work in the linen mill, to boil water for tea in a little tin over a lighted oily rag in the empty fire grate.

My aunt, Jane, she took me in,

And gave me tea out of her wee tin.

Half a bap with sugar on the top,

And three black lumps out of her wee shop.
