I am amazed to see the ridiculous proposals to bring fire service and police call centres together.
There are savings to be made in the police service by amalgamating forces.
In Scotland, seven forces have been made into one.
The reason, I believe, that the police forces are reluctant to adopt that idea is because of the reduced number of opportunities for promotion by top officers, and the reduced number of civilian jobs available for officers once they retire.
The proposal to merge police and fire service call centres is just one more obstacle in the way of merging county police forces together. That is the principal reason we should oppose the move and be very wary of anyone who promotes it.
