Josh Leather will be in for the “shock of his life” when he defends his IBF European light-welterweight title, writes Roy Kelly.
That was the message today from his challenger, Glenn Foot, ahead of Saturday’s Wearside v Teesside derby ... on Tyneside!
He’s in for the biggest shock of his life ... do they think I’m burned out/GLENN FOOT
The Sunderland crowd favourite is confident of ripping the belt from the unbeaten champion at the Metro Radio Arena, adding that he hopes the 25-year-old doesn’t “run away.”
“Josh is a nice boxer, but that’s about all,” said Foot. “He’s a straight-forward, basic fighter, nothing special.
“He’s undefeated, but his record’s been bought, he’s not boxed anyone like Glenn Foot.”
When it was put to the 29-year-old that Leather claimed a decent scalp, stopping Dublin’s Philip Sutcliffe Jnr, to lift the vacant title in Leeds back in May, Foot was distinctly unimpressed?
“Philip Sutcliffe?” said Foot. “When I used to go to Ireland with Sunderland ABC and box in his dad’s gym, he wouldn’t get in the ring with me.
“That’s Philip Sutcliffe.
“I’m ready to go and take his title. Everything has gone perfectly in training and I’m ready for fight night.”
Foot says Leather and his team are making a mistake if they think the Marley Pots hardman is going to be a pushover on the BT Sport-screened promotion, which also features Tommy Ward’s maiden defence of his British super-bantamweight crown.
“If he thinks that then he’s in for the biggest shock of his life,” said Foot. “Do they think I’m burned out because I’ve had a couple of defeats?
“I’ve lost to Sam Eggington, who is the European welterweight champion, and to Akeen Brown, a very awkward southpaw.
“To be honest I thought I was worth a draw in that fight anyway.”
Foot, who has won 21 of his 23 pro bouts, says he is in great shape, having been put through a strict regime by coach, David Binns, at the East Durham College gym in Peterlee.
“Everything has gone to plan,” said the Phil Jeffries-managed fighter. “There are no weight issues, Dave’s had me on the scales every day.
“He’s been on my case!
“I feel 100%, body and mind, training has gone well and there are no excuses.”
