Sadie Thomas has gone out at the Commonwealth Youth Games at the quarter-final stage.

The Headland ABC teenager, boxing for a place in the last four in the U60 kilo division, was beaten by Pelea Soara Fruean in the Bahamas.

Fruean, representing New Zealand, was awarded a unanimous decision at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium in Nassau.

Thomas will be disappointed to miss out on a medal in her first overseas appointment for England – victory over the Kiwi would have guaranteed her at least a bronze.

However, the season will go down as an outstanding one for the 18-year-old.

Thomas lifted both English and GB titles, beating domestic lightweight rival, Harli Whitwell in each final.

It was the climax of a number of years of hard work at the Northgate gym, under the coaching of John Stubbs, who will be looking to the former English Martyrs School student to make further progress next season.
