Hartlepool boxers Martin and Tommy Ward to star on boxing show at Rainton Meadows Arena

BOXING’S Ward brothers will star on a big fight night in the region at the end of the month.

Martin and Tommy are on the bumper card staged by promoter Phil Jeffries at Rainton Meadows Arena on Sunday, November 30.

The Neil Fannan and Dave Garside boxers are both chasing titles next year and will be looking to impress at the Houghton venue in 12 days.

It will be Martin’s first contest since the heartbreak of his world bantamweight title challenge for Stuart Hall’s IBF belt back in March.

The elder of the Ward siblings suffered a horrendous cut in the opening round, which meant referee Marcus McDonell called a halt with the fight declared a technical draw. Since then, the 26-year-old has abdicated his Commonwealth throne to move up to super-bantam.

And he has been given a testing first assignment at 8st 10lbs – a match with former Commonwealth contender Isaac Owusu.

The 29-year-old Ghana champ has won 23 of his 28 bouts, including 18 inside the distance.

Tommy meanwhile is waiting on an opponent for his latest climb up the featherweight ladder.

The 20-year-old has won all 10 of his pro contests and the NES Securities-sponsored fighter is hoping for an English title challenge in 2015.

Jeffries hopes to have at least 10 fights on the super Sunday event which he showcased at a media conference at the venue today.

Glenn Foot and Jonson McClumpha, trained at East Durham College in Peterlee by David Binns, also have bouts.

Foot is gearing towards an English welterweight title challenge in the new year, while Jeffries also wants a championship shot for middleweight McClumpha in 2015.

The rugged William Warburton will take on Foot over six rounds while Kieron Gray will be the opponent for McClumpha.

Another of Jaffa’s crop of exciting Wearside talent is also in action, former Olympian Thomas Essomba, who showed his class at the Summer Rumble at the Stadium of Light back in July.

The bill also features unbeaten Castle Eden middleweight Lynden Watt, Middlesbrough duo John Green and Mohamemd Waqas, and Darlington’s Neil Hepper.

“I’m really excited by this show,” Jeffries said. “I honestly thought the Summer Rumble was going to be the last event I promoted.

“But I’ve got the buzz again and I’ll be following up this show with a big year in 2015.”
