PETER Cope is attracting the interest of a number of promoters as the Gus Robinson Developments boxing team plot the unbeaten star’s next move.

Cope racked up his ninth straight win seven days ago when he defeated Sean “Short Fuse” Hughes in Newcastle.

Fellow Hartlepool boxer Martin Ward’s Commonwealth title success saw him capture the headlines but Gus Robinson Developments head coach, Peter Cope Snr, says his phone has not stopped ringing this week about his son.

The trainer feels the points victory over the former British, Commonwealth and World title challenger has moved him a step closer to the title picture.

“I’m not saying he’s about to fight for the Commonwealth title like Martin,” Cope Snr told SportMail. “He’s not at that level yet.

“But I don’t think he’s that far away from the English championship.

“That win over Sean Hughes has seen him turn a corner.

“We probably needed that win and performance and it has been a significant step.

“It’s made a few people sit up and take notice and I’ve had a number of promoters on the phone this week saying they are interested in Peter.

“We are in a good position in that we are not contracted to any one particular promoter or organisation.

“We can listen to all the offers and pick the best one.

“At the moment we’re keeping our options open.

“He performed very well against Sean and it was a good fight to watch and I can understand why people are interested in him.

“Gus, bless him, always used to say that Peter would be a promoter’s dream because he brings a bit of everything to boxing.

“Peter is quite a good boxer, who can fight with a very support including a lot of girls among his fans.

“I think he’s up to a championship sort of level now and we’ll wait to see what options are there for us.”
