Peter Cope set for title shot against Dougie Curran

PETER Cope has been handed the chance to add a second title to his professional collection - providing he is not Rumbled at the Stadium of Light.

The unbeaten Hartlepool boxer has been lined up to box Dougie Curran for the Northern Area super-featherweight in September.

Cope already has a belt to his name after defeating Gavin Reid in a classic International Masters suprer-bantamweight match at Sunderland’s big annual outdoor bash.

And this 10-rounder for the regional crown would provide another step forward in the 21-year-old’s promising career.

Curran presents a significant test - the 24-year-old Geordie has boxed 26 times and last time out won the little-known International Masters Bronze super-featherweight title on the Black & White fight night in Newcastle last month.

Cope’s coach - and father - is thrilled at the prospect of a North-East derby showdown but concedes there can be no slip ups at next month’s Summer Rumble.

Young Peter has something of a grudge match with Sheffield’s Aqib Hussain at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, July 7, when a defeat could scupper his championship ambitions.

“We are excited about the fight with Curran,” said the head trainer at Gus Robinson Developments.

“It looks set for September and will be in Newcastle, so Dougie will have home advantage, but I’m sure Peter will have plenty of support there.

“Curran wants to take on Peter and we’re happy to accept, it has the makings of a great fight and he’ll definitely test him.

“But Peter has to negotiate his way past Hussain first and that’s not going to be easy.

“Hussain has had plenty to say on the internet so I think it will be tough fight.

“The Curran title bout is a great incentive but we must concentrate on the Stadium of Light show.”
