DURHAM County Cricket Club have signed Irish international wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter on a two-year contract.
The 23 year old former MCC Young cricketer has represented Middlesex and Warwickshire in First-Class cricket.
His 172 against Durham second XI in the second XI Championship for the Young Cricketers caught the eye of Durham coaches.
Poynter has been rewarded for some excellent for Durham seconds, who he joined during last summer.
The Irishman turned in some impressive displays with the bat, including a hundred against Leicestershire, which persuaded Durham to offer him a two-year deal.
Phil Mustard is first choice wicketkeeper at Durham, and Poynter will face a tough test to try wrestle the first-team spot from the wicketkeeper-batsman.
Michael Richardson, who is behind Mustard in the Durham pecking order, has been frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities behind the stumps.
And he will also provide stiff competition for Poynter, although Durham’s coaches may have persuaded Richardson to concentrate on performing solely as a batsman.
Scottish International batsman Calum Macleod will join the men from the Emirates ICG this summer.
Durham skipper Paul Collingwood, who is coaching the Scottish side, is currently working with Macleod, who will join up with the squad on an initial one month period this April.
