DURHAM have been given a major boost by the return of Dale Benkenstein.

It was feared Durham would be without their one-day skipper and middle-order batsman for most of the summmer.

But Benkenstein, who sustained a shoulder injury when diving in the field in the win over Surrey in early May, has made a good recovery and plays today for Durham’s Second XI.

It was expected that he would require surgery but the op has been postponed.

Durham CCC physiotherapist Nigel Kent said: “Dale still needs an operation at some stage.

“But it is hoped we can delay it until after the season.

“He will continue to do rehab and modify his diving technique throughout the rest of the season.”

Benkenstein will return today with the Durham Second XI side who are playing at Brandon CC against the MCC YCC in a 40-over match with a view to returning to the senior team in coming weeks.
