SEATON Carew were today celebrating an historic promotion into the NYSD Premier Division.

Braithwaite was the Seaton man of the match, taking 3-21 to help bowl Maltby out for 121 and then hitting a brilliant unbeaten 80 to give them a six-wicket victory.

It was Seaton’s 17th win of the season and saw them finish runners-up on 418 points with Marske the champs on 439.

The home success by the seasiders held off the challlenge of Bishop Auckland, who finished 14 points adrift in third.

It has lifted Seaton into the top flight for the first time where they will now be taking on neighbours Hartlepool.

Seaton made an excellent start with John Fitzpatrick and Jonny Scott taking three early wickets.

But Richard Stringer (42), Josh Heaney (22) and Matt Crofts (40) fought hard to keep Maltby in the game.

The Yorkshire side, like Seaton, were desperate for the points but for different reasons – they were battling to avoid the drop.

But Carew’s bowlers have performed all season and they did the business again.

Stringer and Heaney were both bowled, Danny Thomas and Jack Turnbull sending them back to the pavilion, while the Braithwaites saw off Matt Crofts, keeper David stumping him off the bowling of younger brother Paul.

And Paul Braithwaite added two further late wickets to end the Maltby innings on 163.

It was a commendable effort by the visitors but Paul soon showed his brilliance with a bat.

The former High Tunstall School pupil, who has starred for Durham U17 this summer, hit a sensational 80 off only 60 balls.

Paul struck a six and 12 fours and – fittingly – was the man to hit the winning runs, with brother David watching from the other end

It was not a one-man show and Gareth Spence (33), Matty Skirving (21) and Jack Stonehouse (17) aiding the teenage all-rounder.
