HARTLEPOOL’S first game of the bank holiday weekend ended very disappointingly as they lost in a close finish to Thornaby.

In a low scoring game, Thornaby’s late order held its nerve to see them home.

Pool batted first and were dealt a bitter blow, when professional Jon Rickard was caught without a run on the board.

Alan Tebbett, given a chance up the order, made 16 quickly, before he departed, closely followed by Neil Coverdale for the same score.

When Marc Symington was deceived, it left the hosts on 68-4 as the visitors became buoyant.

Jack Wilkinson and the in- form Craig Symington began to rebuild the innings, before a flurry of wickets saw Pool finish on 131-9 – the last five falling for just 23 runs.

By no means a good score, Pool still knew they had a good chance of beating the Teesside visitors, but they would need their bowlers to perform from the off.

Neither of the pace bowlers struck early, though the introduction of left-arm spinner, Mike Yuill saw Pool get the breakthrough.

Steve Bould was trapped leg before wicket, before Jon Spillane played one back into the hands of Yuill.

Fellow spinner Rickard then got in on the act, dismissing Amar Shahid and JP Engelbrecht.

Omar Shahid put some impetus back into the scoring rate, smashing 20 from 11 balls before Marc Symington accounted for him.

Danny Burns fell soon after, the Symington brothers combining to dismiss him.

At 97-7, the game was in the balance. Matt Connoly and Dale Metcalfe played patiently, not scoring but building their confidence as they batted numerous overs out of the game.

Connolly fell for 19 from 42 balls, giving Rickard his third of the innings, and leaving the visitors on 123-8.

That was to be the last bright point for Pool though as Metcalfe smashed his side home in the final over of the innings, leaving Pool on the wrong end of the result.
