Students from East Meets West Black Belt Academy in Bedlington Station recently took part in the 7th World Kickboxing Championships in Albufeira Portugal.

Six students took part in the English national qualifiers and were successful in being selected to fight for Team England going on to represent their country at the championships.

But never in their wildest dreams did they imagine that all their hard work would pay off, as after training all year the youngsters came away with a grand total of seven gold, four silvers and one bronze.

Fight coach Gareth Beddow said: “I am very impressed at the hard work and determination shown by these young people, they have all overcome so much in their pursuit of their dreams of becoming world champions.”

Since coming back from Portugal there has been a massive buzz around the academy, these young people have brought back with them so much more than world titles they now have the experience to pass on their knowledge to the other students in the academy and they have paved the way for future success.

Senior instructor Colin Beddow said: “This really has been a team effort from the people of Bedlington, the academy, instructors and also from the friends of East Meets West who have really gotten behind the kids and have tirelessly held all sorts of fundraising events to ensure these youngsters get the opportunity to compete at the highest level of their chosen sport.”
