To Exeter City via Alicante: Meet the Hartlepool United fan making a brilliant trip to cheer on Pools

Having already had to travel to Yeovil Town twice in this season’s competition, Pools fans could be forgiven for letting out a sigh after they were paired with the Grecians in the second round of the famous cup.

But while the journey from the North East to St James’ Park is long enough already, one supporter has decided to add some extra intrigue to his journey – by travelling via Alicante in Spain.

Pools fan Matty Mason tweeted shortly after the draw was made that one of the cheapest ways to travel to Exeter was to fly from Newcastle to Alicante and then from the Spanish holiday resort to the South West.

And while many mocked his money-saving plan, Mason wasn’t letting it deter him – and started the first leg of his journey on Saturday morning.

Sharing an update on his Twitter account, Mason revealed that he had arrived in Alicante having left Newcastle at 6:55am – and was set to depart from Spain to Exeter at 5:10pm.

Despite the beaches of Alicante no doubt proving tempting, Mason is set to take his spot on the terraces for Sunday’s 2pm kick-off – and here’s hoping Pools repay his loyalty with progression to the third round!
