The 23-year-old joins Pools on loan until the end of the season after playing just seven minutes in League One for Fleetwood so far this season.

The Welsh defender came through the ranks at Cardiff City before making his name in the Welsh Premier League with Barry Town before The Fishermen snapped him up last February.

Southam-Hales will be available for selection ahead of Saturday’s match against Stockport County at Victoria Park (3pm kick-off).

“Over the past three weeks we’ve been trying to get bodies in the building who can help us moving forward,” said Hartlepool manager Dave Challinor.

“Macauley was one who was on a list of three or four in terms of ones we'd be interested in if they were available. It was one of those where we ask a question and it’s a no, then you ask again when the situation changes and it gives Macauley the chance to come out and get some games.

“I’m looking forward to working with him, he’s a modern day full-back who has played men’s football at Barry Town which got him his move to Fleetwood.

“I think it will be a really good fit and it’s a great opportunity for him to play some games at a club where there’s an expectation and has the structure of a Football League club.

“Hopefully he’ll start on Saturday against Stockport in front of a big crowd and a great atmosphere.”
