COLIN Cooper has revealed he wants to keep Middlesbrough loanee Matty Dolan at Hartlepool United for the foreseeable future.
The 20-year-old completed a month-long loan move last week and made an impressive debut during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town.
The terms of Dolan’s youth-loan mean that the deal must be extended after each month.
And, rather than return to Teesside after his initial four-week period, Cooper is determined to see the classy midfielder remain at Victoria Park.
“I want Matty Dolan here for the rest of his career!” the Pools chief told SportMail today when pressed on the length of his stay.
“But it’s one of those what we have to look at the end of each month, that’s the way youth-loans work.
“Matty is one of those who is desperate to extend himself, playing for a league team, for league points in front of a league crowd.
“He feels as though development football is something which he wants to leave behind.
“Being a Hartlepool lad he wants to do well for his hometown club.
“But ultimately he wants to break through at Middlesbrough.
“In the meantime we’re delighted to have him here.
“I hold him in very high esteem.”
Dolan will keep his place in the centre of midfield for Saturday’s trip to Torquay United.
The former English Martyrs pupil was part of a much-improved team performance against Fleetwood, and Cooper reflected: “Matty did what I expected on Saturday.
“He brought enthusiasm, energy, he got on the ball and passed it.
“He can pass, he can shoot, he can tackle.
“Sometimes you get tarred with the brush of being a holding midfield player.
“Matty can do that but he can also get around and he’s got a thunderous left foot on him.
“But he’s 20 and may make mistakes - for their goal he went off his shape, trying to get in behind them out of sheer enthusiasm.
“But on the whole the way he goes about his business is exactly why I want him here and he will only improve what we have got.”
