Billy Paynter’s sixth goal of the season took Hartlepool United to their first win in four matches at Dagenham & Redbridge.

It was a game of few opportunies at Victoria Road and it was settled by Paynter’s 34th-minute header from Dan Jones’s cross from the left.

Pools boss Ronnie Moore had rung the changes, as he promised, with Trevor Carson, Luke Hendrie and Magnus Okuonghae all making their debuts.

Pools had the first shot of the game on 22 minutes, Jake Carroll off-target, but the opening chance was in the fifth minute, Ashley Chambers going wide of Trevor Carson’s left post.

There was another threat seven minutes later when Jake Mulraney got a cross in from the left but Ashley Hemmings could not get a clean connection and Carson made a safe take.

It was a solid debut for Carson who got down well to his right in the 18th minute when ex-Sunderland and Boro defender Justin Hoyte tried his luck from outside the box with his right foot.

Pools went in front in the 34th minute through PAYNTER.

Dan Jones swung in a cross from the left with the Pools skipper heading past O’Brien from 10 yards.

Three minutes from the break, there was a chance for Daggers but Kane Ferdinand dragged his shot wide of Carson’s right-hand stick from 14 yards following a Mulraney cross.

Pools made a good start to the second half and went close after just four minutes.

Carroll played in a cross, with Paynter’s cushioned header finding Bingham, who scooped over from three yards. Thankfully the flag was up for offside to spare his blushes.

But Bingham soon won a corner off Hoyte and Okuonghae was a yard wide with header from Carroll’s flag-kick from the left.

There was little to trouble Pools but a misdirected Jodi Jones cross almost caught out Carson but the keeper recovered to catch cleanly at his front post.

Jodi Jones was lively down the right as Daggers had the majority of possession but Pools were coping with it successfully.

Dagenham brought on Frankie for Frankie on 73 minutes, Sutherland coming on for Raymond.

There was a Pools sub too, new signing Jason Banton coming on for Dan Jones, with Carroll going to left-back.

Banton was straight into play with a 70 yard run forward from a Carson throw-out following a corner.

It was two-against two, with Bingham with him but Banton tried his luck from 20 yards, O’Brien saving well low near his near post.

There was a scare three minutes from time when Hendrie hacked clear from a teasing Jones cross.

And there was another in the first minute of stoppage time after right-back Passley got in behind the away defence but Cureton fired wide.
