Ronnie Moore was left “gobsmacked” after watching his side go down 4-1 at home to Luton Town.
Pools, the better side for the first 45 minutes, were left to rue several missed opportunities by Rakish Bingham, in particular.
The sides had gone in level 1-1 at the break with Pools seemingly in command.
But the second half was dreadful from a defensive point of view and they were made to pay as Luton scored three after the break to wrap up the win.
Moore said: “If anyone wasn’t here they see 4-1 and think we were battered – yet I’m gobsmacked.
“They defended better when they had to, but we had clear cut chances.
“Really good chances and it’s not gone for us, when you don’t score yourselves, keep the other end tight or you are in trouble.
“Defend better and it can be 1-1 – instead we are 2-1 down from a nothing ball and it gets frustrating for everyone.
“It’s been a good away win last week then two tough games, Tuesday was different to this one – they were energetic and enthusiastic.
“Don’t make chances and then you can’t defend and it’s costly.”
Captain Billy Paynter was taken off as a precaution after taking a knock to his leg.
