Michael Woods is looking to get one over his old manager as Hartlepool United conclude their pre-season programme against Chesterfield.

Pools host The Spireites at Victoria Park today (KO 3pm), with manager Ronnie Moore keen to see his side build on the 3-0 win over non-league Dunston UTS on Wednesday night.

Woods used to play under Dean Saunders during a short spell at Doncaster Rovers.

And he is expecting a tough afternoon workout against his League One Chesterfield – who have ex-Pools star Ritchie Humphreys in their ranks.

“Chesterfield are a good footballing side and it will be a tough test,” the 25-year-old midfielder told SportMail.

“I played for Dean Saunders at Doncaster a couple of years ago – his teams are always hard-working.

“You know what you get and these are the games that really test you.

“It is all right playing Billingham and other non-league sides, but we should be beating them.

“Playing Chesterfield is a good test of where we are at,” added the ex-Leeds United and Chelsea youth.

Pools were beaten 5-3 by Gateshead last weekend, a defeat which left a sour taste in the mouth of Moore.

It led to him naming a strong side for the win over Northern League side Dunston, with Moore keen to give his squad more game time playing the 3-5-2 formation.

Woods said the players have been grafting all week on the system at the club’s Maiden Castle base, in Durham, and he is looking forward to an improved display in front of the home support.

He added: “We have been working hard all week and need to get a better response.”

The draw dates for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy have been finalised, including the date of the announcement of the make up of the first round regional groups and which teams will receive a first round bye.

Pools will find out their first round involvement at 10am on Monday, with the first round draw to take place live on Sky’s Soccer AM next Saturday.
