Billy Paynter called for a “reaction” from Hartlepool United for Saturday’s difficult home game with Luton Town.
After last night’s 3-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers, Pools take on a Hatters side who have won four of their last five matches to move into 11th, the place Ronnie Moore’s side had occupied.
Skipper Paynter says Pools need to up their game after a “disappointing” display against the Pirates.
“It’s going to be a tough game on Saturday,” said the striker. “Luton have got good players, lads who’ve played at a higher level.
“We have to be on our game or it will be another disappointing day.
“It’s down to us, only us can make it happen. We need a reaction come Saturday.”
Paynter admitted the side performed badly last night and was surprised given the rise in optimism from the win at Yeovil.
“We never got going,” he said. “It was a sloppy start – we let them get into the game, they grew in confidence, and dictated the play. We conceded bad goals.
“On the night, we just weren’t good enough.
“We wanted a fast start, get up and at them, but we never got going.
“We were lucky to go in one down, they had other chances.
“There were words said at half-time and you hope there will be a reaction. Butit never came.
“I don’t really want to say it was one of the nights, but it was very disappointing.
“Yeovil was sloppy but we worked hard to get the result.
“I thought the lads would be full of confidence. But the slow start has killed us.”
