Boss Craig Hignett has named his first Hartlepool United XI of the season - and it looks a potent one.

His four most advanced players all made the starting team against Colchester United at Northern Gas & Power Stadium, Lewis Alessandra, Padraig Amond, Billy Paynter and Nathan Thomas.

Paynter looks like taking the central attacking role with Amond just behind him, with Thomas and Alessandra part of a very attack-minded midfield.

Matthew Bates missed out at the back with Rob Jones playing alongside summer signing Toto Nsiala following their successful alliance against Scunthorpe last Saturday.

NIcky Featherstone recovered from a groin strain to take his place as holding midfielder.

Pools: Carson, Magnay, Nsiala, Jones, Carroll, Featherstone, Alessandra, Hawkins, Thomas, Amond, Paynter

Colchester: Walker, Brindley, Eastman, Prosser, Kinsella, Guthrie, Slater, Lapslie, Wright, Szmodics, Porter

Bransgrove, Kent, Loft, Vincent-Young, Johnstone, Bonne, Sembie-Ferris
