TRIALIST Scott Fenwick scored twice as Hartlepool United’s reserve team beat Gateshead 2-1 to win their first league cup group match.

The 24-year-old striker was being tracked by a number of league clubs over the summer after impressing in non-league circles at Durham FC and Dunston UTS over the past two years.

Fenwick netted his first in the 63rd minute from close range, before Gateshead sub Micky Cummins equalised with his first touch after coming on.

But the Dunston UTS striker - who caused Gateshead problems all afternoon - scored the winner in the 75th minute.

He beat the offside trap to cooly lob the ball over the head of Alex Baird and into the net.

Pools reserves, managed by player coach Sam Collins, fully deserved the win after dominating for large periods and carving out the clearer chances at Billingham Town’s Bedford Terrace ground.

It was the first group game of the Final Third Development League Cup.

Fenwick was one of three trialists included in the side, goalkeeper Jonathan Maxted - who played against Pools for Bradford Park Avenue in pre-season - started as did Darren McKnight, from Barnsley.

McKnight, 19, is coming towards the end of a six-month contract at Oakwell and started the match up front alongside Fenwick.

A Northern Ireland youth international McKnight played regularly for Barnsley’s Under 21s last season in midfield and defence.
