Hartlepool United’s youth team were beaten 5-0 tonight at Ashington.
The Northern League outfit were too strong for a very young Pools side, though the visitors, coached by John Hewitson never lacked effort.
Fraser Briggs went close with a couple of long-range efforets, while Jordan Jewson and Jack Blackford were denied by the home keeper.
Pools fielded summer signing Peter Denton in goal and also included Kieran Green and Scott Howes, who featured in the pre-season draw at Whitby, but otherwise were a youthful and raw team.
Pools also had to contend with Ashington boss Steve Harmison, the Ashes cricket hero, bringing on a fresh side for the second half.
Ashington raced into an early two-goal lead.
Kyle Oliver curled a superb right-foot shot into the net and then finished a flowing movement by slotting home from close-range.
In the last quarter of the game, Ashington went nap with Dylan Armstrong, Dylan Williamson and Michael Bell beating goalkeeper James Dawson, who had taken over from Denton for the second half.
