Hopes had been high that the Northern Ireland Under-21 man would be fit and available but stand-in boss Matthew Bates will be unable to select Donnelly this weekend.

The player had an injection on a troublesome ankle on Thursday but was unable to train properly on Friday and as a result will not be risked.

That news means Bates will have to go with what he has this afternoon at the Vic - with just 13 senior professionals in the ranks and the numbers made up of a selection of first year pros and youth team apprentices.

Ryan Donaldson is back on the training pitch but will not be rushed after two operations to fix an injured ankle.

FIVE key areas for Hartlepool United caretaker Matthew Bates to addressAaron Cunningham, Michael Ledger and Kenton Richardson remain sidelined.
