Jeff Stelling has joked he would happily hand over his Freeman of the Borough title to Ronnie Moore following Hartlepool United’s Great Escape.

The Hartlepool-born Sky Sports presenter was awarded the title back in 2010 and he believes Moore should be recognised in some way too following his work at Pools.

Moore took charge just before Christmas, with Pools adrift at the foot of Sky Bet League Two.

But over the course of the following five months, he guided the club to safety against all the odds.

“They should build a statue of Ronnie,” Stelling told SportMail.

“A few years ago I got the Freeman of the Borough title and I’ll pass that on to Ronnie - he deserves it more than me!”

Stelling, who regular promotes the fortunes of Pools on his Soccer Saturday programme, has also praised the club’s owners IOR for their support following the failed takeover bid by TMH 2014.

Moore has previously praised chairman Ken Hodcroft for his support and Stelling echoed that.

He added: “The owners have gone from being the devil in disguise, if you like, to the saviours in a lot of respects and they deserve credit too.

“I don’t see much money being thrown at it this summer, because I don’t think there is much money.

“But people point to Wycombe and they didn’t have a lot of money thrown at them after surviving relegation and look what they achieved last season. You never know but I wouldn’t want to put any pressure on Ronnie. I’d settle for a season with no scares!”
