John Hughes could turn up at Matty Dolan’s door in bid to sign Pools-born star

JOHN Hughes is “desperate” to sign Matty Dolan – admitting he could turn up at his Hartlepool home with a signing-on form.

The 19-year-old Middlesbrough midfielder is back in the north-east with a bout of tonsillitis having last week trained with Yeovil Town.

The Glovers are equally keen to land the loan signature of Dolan, who spent a period training with Pools before deciding to see what the Somerset club had to offer.

They had hoped to complete a deal for the former English Martyrs pupil in time for yesterday’s game at home to Leyton Orient, but illness saw him return north.

And Hughes told SportMail today: “I hear he’s back home now – well he might just find a big, ugly Scotsman standing outside his front door with a signing-on form.

“I’m desperate to get him in.

“I know Yeovil are desperate to get him as well and I understand why.

“The chairman (Ken Hodcroft) and Russ (Green, chief executive) have said to give it a go.

“So we’ll have to see what happens.”

Hughes has made no secret of his desire to bring Dolan to Victoria Park.

The Scot watched yesterday as his side laboured to a 1-0 defeat at home to Preston North End, and he feels the loan addition of the deep-lying midfield player would strengthen his hand.

“I want him for a number of reasons – my first signing is important,” he said.

“I want to bring somewhere here who the Hartlepool fans can identify with.

“He’s a right good footballer with good legs.

“When you have that at your disposal I can look to change things about a little bit.”
