HARTLEPOOL United crashed to defeat in their first home friendly of the summer as Championship Barnsley strode to a 3-0 victory.

Mick Wadsworth chose to field the strongest side available to him for the visit of his hometown club, with Nobby Solano appearing at Victoria Park for the first time.

Adam Boyd partnered new signing Colin Nish in attack, but that twosome saw precious little of the ball during a disappointing first-half.

After a sluggish opening Barnsley’s Reuben Noble-Lazarus brought the game to life on 15 minutes.

Unchallenged, the winger skipped infield from the right before smashing a thunderous drive beyond a static Scott Flinders from the edge of the area.

Pools failed to take heed of that warning and the visitors’ second again involved a Noble-Lazarus piledriver.

This time Flinders did get something on the strike but only enough to parry it into the path of Danny Haynes who confidently tucked home the rebound on 21 minutes.

The closest Pools came to a first-half response was a neatly-crafted one-two involving Boyd and Tony Sweeney which resulted in the latter rattling the crossbar with a volley from a narrow angle.

Nobby Solano went close to halving the deficit shortly after the break when his header, from Evan Horwood’s deep centre, was diverted up and over the crossbar by the brow of Jimmy McNulty inside the six-yard area.

But the hosts fell further behind just after the hour mark, Jacob Butterfield prising open the backline with a killer throughball for Haynes to tuck away his second.

And that was how it stayed as the game petered to a subdued conclusion.
