Hartlepool United completed their pre-season programme with a draw at Whitley Bay.

Trialist Lewis Maloney, released by Middlesbrough scored a stunning seventh minute goal from outside the box to give Pools the lead.

But the Northern League club clinched a draw with a 53rd-minute Callum Patton penalty.

Maloney was one of four Pools trialists who started at Hillheads, Canada U23 centre-back Kosovar Sadiki, Maloney's former Boro team-mate Junior Mondal and ex-Middlesbrough and Pools forward Jonathan Franks.

All four were involved at both ends.

And MALONEY made his impact very early, firing a blistering low shot from 25 yards inside the seventh minute.

Pools had the better of the opening 45 minutes, home keeper Tom Flynn making super saves from Franks, Jake Cassidy and Mondal.

Whitley Bay were not without chances and teenage keeper Ryan Catterick saved well from Peter Glen-Ravenhill while Tom Potter fired wide.

If it had not been a friendly, Sadiki would have been testing the temperature of the showers in the 37th minute when he felled Alex Kempster as the last man after losing ball.

He stayed on and Kyle Patton put the free-kick over bar.

After the break, Franks hit the far post with cross while Flynn came out smartly to deny Mondal.

But the Northern League outfit were level eight minutes into the second half when half-time sub Jacob Owen conceded a penalty.

Midfielder CALLUM PATTON stroked the spot-kick into the keeper's botttom-left corner with Catterick diving the opposite way.

Pools came back and Flynn tipped over a Cassidy header from a Deverdics cross only for the referee to give a goal-kick.

Devante Rodney made his first appearance of pre-season, coming on for Featherstone for the last quarter of an hour.

Bay were finishing the contest strongly and Thibault Charmey missed a decent chance for from Kempter's cross.

And eight minutes from time, Catterick made a cracking save low to his left from sub Matt Cornish's drive from outside the area.

Rodney had a late chance for Pools but was denied by defender Calum Anderson.
