HARTLEPOOL United will today extend the loan stay of Newcastle United striker Ryan Donaldson.
The renewal of the deal to keep the England youth ace at Victoria Park became all the more pertinent in the wake of the ankle injury picked up by James Brown during Tuesday’s goalless draw with Southampton.
He failed to emerge from the dressing room after half-time and is almost certain to miss Saturday’s trip to Exeter City.
Pools boss Mick Wadsworth, though, was always keen to lengthen Donaldson’s spell with the club, after his current deal expired on Tuesday, and he now looks set to travel with the rest of the squad to Devon this weekend.
Wadsworth admits that the 19-year-old needed a couple of games to find his feet at League One level following his arrival towards the end of January, a move first revealed here in SportMail.
But his performances in recent matches, while not yet yielding a deserved goal, have nonetheless won the Geordie starlet an extended run in the team.
Wadsworth said: “If you think he’s played against three very good teams in the past week and has equipped himself very well.
“Of course he’s still got things to learn but my view is that he will get better and better with the more games he plays.
“He needed those first couple of games to learn what it was all about but that was to be expected.
“But he’s been unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions, he had good goal wiped out on Saturday, and we’ve been pleased with how he’s done this past week.”
