Ronnie Moore returned to Victoria Park in triumph tonight as Hartlepool United beat Newport County 1-0.
It was not the most convincing of performances against an impressive Welsh side who played some good football.
But Pools got their third League Two win on the trot thanks to a superb 51st-minute finish from Scott Fenwick.
“Newport were slick in movement and passing and they have a good young squad that will only get better,” said Moore.
“We dug deep and probably had the best chances, but scored with the first shot we had.
“We had chances to put the game to bed and didn’t and it shows how important the defending can be.
“We could have lost this one in the past, but it’s about character and luck and you earn luck with effort and commitment you put in.”
And the winner was something special.
“Scott has the knack of scoring goals and it was a tremendous strike,” said Moore.
The Pools boss missed the wins at Fleetwood andYork while in Spain with daughter, Charlotte, who fell ill on a family holiday.
“It’s been a difficult week for me,” said Moore.
“The response from all has been fantastic and we thank them for that.
“But having your nine-year-old in hospital with pneumonia is hard for everyone.
“Hopefully all is well now and she needs an X-Ray on Thursday.”
