ANTONY Sweeney says it’s time for Hartlepool United’s under-performing stars to emerge from their home slump by taking victory over Preston North End tonight (kick off 7.45pm).
The 28-year-old insists that the players have to take full responsibility for a run of six straight defeats at Victoria Park – a ruinous stretch which has undermined the club-record start.
And, with a 12-day break just around the corner, Sweeney knows they can ill afford another home reverse this evening.
“There’s only us as players can change this,” he told SportMail, “Not the manager, the coaches or the fans – it’s up to us to turn up tonight and really dig in.
“We’ve got to do the ugly things better, get down to basics – pressing, harrying and staying in the game.
“The fans might not think it’s pretty but if it gets us that win to get the home form going then you can start introducing better football.
“But we’ve got to put right what’s going wrong tonight and if there ever was a must-win game, a six-pointer then it’s this one.
“We’ve got a break after tonight and whether that’s a good thing or bad thing all depends on this result.”
