TRIBUTES have been paid to former Hartlepool United commercial manager and lifelong supporter John Breward.
John died in the early hours of Saturday morning and he has been labelled a “legend” by Pools and by one of the club’s best-ever managers, Chris Turner.
Ex-boss and director of sport, Chris Turner, worked closely with John, especially during his first spell at the club from 1999-2002, and spoke with him on Friday.
“I had the privilege of speaking with John hours before he died and I told him he’d always be in my thoughts,” Turner said.
“He is one of the best people I have ever met in my life.
“John was so supportive in the early days and he introduced me to so many people in Hartlepool.
“I lived in Hartlepool and John was always welcome in my house.
“He was a great man and me and [wife] Debbie loved him to bits.
“John was and always will be a legend in my eyes.”
Hartlepool United paid a fulsome tribute to John on the club website under the headline: ‘Club pays tribute to legend’.
The statement read: “John worked tirelessly for the club for many years, developing the commercial department at Victoria Park and becoming a familiar and well-respected face across the town in the process.
“His friendly approach made him popular with club sponsors and staff, as well as the management and players – indeed he could often be found in the home changing room on matchdays delivering his own unique team talk to the squad.
“John continued to have a strong affiliation with the club following his retirement and came along to games at the Vic when he could and he was always a welcome guest.”
