MICK Wadsworth insists Hartlepool United are just as good as big spending Sheffield Wednesday, writes CRAIG HOPE>
The Owls were 1-0 victors at Victoria Park on Saturday, bringing to a close Pools’ nine-match unbeaten start.
The Hillsborough club have invested heavily in their playing squad over the summer in a bid to escape League One, but prior to the weekend’s game they trailed their hosts in the table.
And, after an evenly-matched contest in which Reda Johnson’s first-half header separated the sides, Wadsworth was adamant that his men can compete with Wednesday this season.
“With their resources and their financial clout they would expect to be, and need to be, up there at the top of the table,” the manager told SportMail.
“They’ve got themselves sorted out after a dodgy few years and have brought some very good players to the club – things we can’t dream of in terms of outlay, but I don’t think they’re better than us.
“If we’re within five or six points of them come the end of the season then we’ll be doing alright, and I think we can be.
“They’re a very good team and have good strikers and good wingers.
“They stretch you and push you to the limit.
“But I thought we deserved a draw from Saturday at least.
“We nearly wore them down and they were in a panicky mood for much of the second half.
“As Corporal Jones said, ‘They don’t like it up em’.”
