‘It will be a good learning curve for him’ – Challinor discusses debut of Blackburn Rovers' loanee in FA Cup defeat at Salford City

Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor believes Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Salford City will be a ‘good learning curve’ for new loan signing Tyler Magloire.

Less than 24-hours after his arrival from Blackburn Rovers was confirmed, the 21-year-old centre-back was named in Pools’ starting line-up for the first round tie at the Peninsula Stadium.

In extra-time, Pools’ resilient defence finally came undone as goals from Bruno Andrade and Mani Dieseruvwe saw the Ammies progress.

Despite the result, Challinor was pleased with the performance of his side and felt 120-minutes on the field would be beneficial for his latest arrival.

“It will be a good learning curve for him after coming from a brief experience of League One football with Rochdale where he played largely as a full-back,” Challinor said.

“He’ll learn from his decision in the build-up for the first goal. It wasn’t a mistake as such but the ball should have been booted out the ground so he’ll be beating himself up a bit, but it's not a problem for me.

"There only becomes a problem if he does it again, you have to use your experiences, good and bad, to learn from and make the right decisions in the future.”

On Magloire’s role in the side, Challinor added: “He adds real pace for us and allows us to defend high up the pitch after we lost Timi [Odusina] and his pace through injury.

"Saturday wasn’t the time to defend like that but moving forward it will allow us to push bodies forward into advanced areas safe in the knowledge that if it’s a foot race between the halfway line and our goal, we’ve got a player who will win it most of the time.

“I think Timi would give Tyler a decent race too. We want to get bodies forward and that can leave you exposed.

"We were far too exposed against Torquay last Saturday. When I’m talking about being expansive and positive in possession, that doesn’t mean leave ourselves open.

"We’ve got to be better in our defensive structure and we showed good signs which is a positive but there’s still lots of work to do.”
