The Teessiders are just a point above the Championship relegation zone after 19 games and look set to be involved in a relegation dogfight this campaign. But while some players have struggled, others have improved under Woodgate – we’ve picked out three players at both ends of the spectrum.
1. Improved: Hayden Coulson
A youngster who has taken his opportunity with both hands. The 21-year-old, who was on loan at Cambridge last season, looks ready to play in the Championship and came back strong after an injury setback earlier in the season. Photo: Getty Images
2. Improved: Marvin Johnson
Despite his red card against Hull, Johnson has been a key player for Woodgate this season. The winger's adaptability has allowed him to fill in at wing-back this season after Boro changed their formation. This time last season many Boro fans had probably forgotten about the 29-year-old. 3. Struggled: Adam Clayton
At the start of the season it looked Clayton would be Boro's first-choice holding midfielder. However, after a difficult start to the campaign, the 30-year-old has been left on the bench in recent weeks despite the side's lack of options. Photo: Frank Reid
4. Struggled: Dael Fry
Last season's injury has probably played a part, yet Fry has been far less convincing this term. Switching to a back three has made Boro more secure at the back but Fry has looked vulnerable at times. Photo: Alex Davidson
