Despite an uneventful first half, many supporters were positive after the full-time whistle with many crediting head coach Jonathan Woodgate for his second half changes.

The Boro boss altered his side’s formation and brought eventual match-winner Lewis Wing off the bench.

Here’s how some Boro fans reacted to the result on social media:

@p_mards: The switch to 4-4-2 after we conceded dragged Stoke into a battle, which they couldn’t cope with. It was a great switch by Woodgate as we were terrible before then. It’s the most enjoyable home game in as long as I can remember

@Mackie4Ian: Massive win for @Boro tonight with mainly academy players big turning point in the season with 5 under21 players in the starting line up the futures bright very well done lads

@kieekinghorn: For the first time this season Woodgate has made a positive change that has benefited us, next step is not having to make the change. Gestede will be a good player to have when fully fit especially last 20 when leading.

@Dan_Radics: Much, much better second half. The change of formation worked well so credit to Woodgate. Wing‘s goal was a beauty! Hopefully can push on now

@Matt_Rowney: First half was diabolical. And going 1-0 down I thought this was it for Woodgate. But not for the first time this season, he made a change, and it made the difference. For a young team to come back like that was brilliant! A monumentally huge win!

@jstringfellow88: Amazing what you can do with a bit of attacking intent. Credit to woodgate for the changes but it had to be done after that first half. 3 massive points. Give ayala whatever contract he wants please

@Andrew_McVittie: Big win for Woodgate and big win for Boro. I still don't think the club is going to turn the corner though. Pulis left Boro after finishing 7th. Disappointing - yes. I don't think the club imagined fighting against relegation the following season. It's a tricky problem.

@JenniferHayton_: Best early Christmas present! Woodgate deserves all the credit for his team talk and changes. Young lads have done us proud. Can’t pick a man of the match. Utterly delighted. Merry Christmas all

@K4MY_: Huge 3 points. Credit to Woodgate for changing the game with his substitutions. Ayala, Tav, Spence were outstanding.

@Jackallison34: Credit to Woodgate there by the way. Never thought I’d say it but the double change is what won us that game. Wing scoring and helping us he forward and Gestede holding the ball up well
