There was also praise for frontman Rudy Gestede, who marked his first league start of the season with an impressive performance at Deepdale.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the result on social media:

@Lauren_H1986: Well its been an outstanding xmas for the mighty boro & it looks like woodgate has got the lads playing for him after all. But lets not get carried away as fans just yet as we're still only 16th, but like I've said above positive all the same that breeds success.

@lynpogue: And that's why you stick with your manager when the club is in a transitional period, new playing style and bedding youngsters in. Where's the Woodgate out brigade now?

@Sam_Keaveney: Rudy Gestede’s performance was top class today. Brilliant goal, linked up really well with the other lads and pretty much chased and chased every ball possible

@paulistapark: All credit to Woodgate. He's made some smart tactical switches after that awful first half against Stoke and he's changed shape and line ups intelligently. His big calls have come off. They won't always but he's taking risks and that's to be applauded.

@SugarFreeStuani: This man has had a lot of stick off the fans (myself included) but he's making a lot of us eat humble pie recently. Swarmed with injuries and suspensions yet still managed to get the players to play his brand of football with results. Johnny Woodgate is a red

@HarryHamilt0n: What a game. Crazy. Can I just say Gestede was immense, Boro fans were class throughout the game and the ref was dreadful. Great performance from the boys today.

@JohnWilberforc1: Unrecognisable. Gestede noticeably faster and motivated.

@BenRCG: Well done Woody and the @Boro lads! 4th win on the bounce. Another clean sheet despite losing Ayala. Keep it going!

@__MatthewBrown: Tavernier looks a different player in this team at the moment. Thought he was going to fall by the wayside but now he’s always leading the attacks and looks very dangerous on the ball
