Key Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala will find out today the extent of a knee injury that forced him off in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Boss Tony Pulis has confirmed Ayala, who went off in the 64th minute with a suspected knee injury, will have a scan today.

Boro trail 1-0 heading into Tuesday night's Championship play-off semi-final second leg at Villa Park and Pulis says if there is a chance of Ayala playing, the he will.

The Spaniard was heading to hospital on Monday morning after limping out of Saturday evening's first leg 1-0 defeat at the Riverside.

Pulis said: "He's going for a scan today, so we'll see what the scan says. But obviously if there's any chance of Dani playing, he's going to play.

"We'll wait until he comes back from the hospital and we'll take a view then."
